Athletics are becoming a big part of the public's life with more and more people becoming involved in one type of athletics or another. Now, more than ever, people are weight and health conscious and are trying to get plenty of exercise daily. Participating in different types of athletics gives us a chance to be competitive and stay healthy at the same time.

Athletic sports have taken a rise in popularity as far as activities, athletic attire and unisex sports. There was a time when certain athletic sports were just for boys and men. That is no longer the case today where women are participating and excelling in many sports that were once only for men. Track and field events such as hurdling, relay race or high jump are just a few of the athletic sports that women are now taking part in. They are participating in grade school, high school and even taking them to the college level. Some of the other athletic events are triple jump, decathlon, pole vault, long jump, discus, javelin or hammer throw.

With so many athletic sports being played today, it makes sense that the clothing designer and manufacturers would be making many new styles of athletic wear. Almost any type of clothing is now being made into some sort of athletic clothing and because name brand companies such as Adidas, Nike, Champion or Russell are selling the athletic clothes, they are fast sellers. Some examples are athletic shorts, athletic shoes, athletic pants and athletic supporters. These ever so popular brands of athletic clothing are sold in department stores, discount stores, retail stores and high-end clothing stores. Where as at one time athletic clothing was only worn for playing sports, they are now being worn as fashion wear.

If an athlete takes his athletics serious and can afford it, they often hire a personal athletic trainer. An athletic trainer will work one on one with you to train you in specific areas that you need work in or are participating in for a competition. There are many career opportunities in athletic training for those willing to put in the work and go to athletic training schools or athletic training programs. One main purpose of an athletic trainer is to show you the correct way to do sports without injuring your body parts. Many athletes have their career cut short due to some athletic injury such as spinal cord injury, knee injury and possibly head injuries. Some of the most common athletic injuries could have been avoided with the proper care and exercise.
