When high jump was first done years ago, many used a high jump technique called the scissors technique. They had the choice of using the scissors technique or the straight-on approach. In the scissors technique, the bar is approached diagonally, and the jump will first throw the inside of one leg over and then the other leg in a scissoring motion.

Many stores online sell clothing and supplies for high jump and other field events. Many athletes feel they can throw better when they are wearing high jump spikes. Different companies manufacture high jump shoes.

Learning how to high jump may seem difficult to some, but it's a relatively easy sport to learn. Some students or athletes enroll into some sort of high jump training to better themselves at the sport. At the beginning, the bar is set at a low height and is moved upward in certain increments (usually around 2 inches or 3 to 5 centimeters). Each competitor can choose what height they want the bar at as long the height is greater than the designated starting height. According to the high jump rules, the committee in charge of the competition determines the starting point for the jump.

Once the competition begins, each jumper gets three chances at that particular height. If they clear the bar, they move on to the next level or they can choose to pass a certain level. When they've missed three jumps, they are out of the competition. The one who makes the highest jump without missing is the winner. In case of a tie, there is a jump off where the one that clears the next highest level is the winner.
