Girls Athletic
For years, when the term athletic was used, it was always used in reference to men and boys. That is no longer the case, with so many girls' athletic groups in the world. Many cities and schools have unions and organizations just for the athletic girls that want to participate in specific sports. Such is the case with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, which has been active since 1926. Their purpose is to promote, organize and direct amateur interscholastic athletic group relationships between junior high and secondary athletic teen girls from different schools that are also members. They thrive to instill fair play and good sportsmanship between the competitors throughout the state of Iowa. This group consists of over 70,000 students all participating in the group's sports.
Many girl athletes are so talented in their game that they try to get an athletic scholarship to the school of their choice. Many families have an athletic girl in their family that excels in one or more sports and is attempting to get to college on an athletic scholarship. This is a completely new trend for society. Girl athletes in the 1960s were not acknowledged as athletes, but rather as just beautiful athletic girls that enjoyed playing sports as a pastime. Tennis is probably the sport that helped to combine the words 'girls' and 'athlete' in the same sentence. Since then, more and more women are getting into professional and televised sports each year.

To promote the idea of girl and female athletes, many athletic clothing manufacturers are designing clothing with athletic girl pictures screen-printed on the front such as on t-shirts, hats or memorabilia. Part of the attraction for girl athletes is the idea of always feeling they have to prove they are as good as men athletes are. There have been many quotes for girl athletes, usually said by girl athletes. One example is a quote by the sky surfer, Tanya Garcia-O'Brien, who said, "A guy friend of mine told me sky surfing was sketchy, so it just made me want to do it more." This helps to prove how competitive girl athletes are and can be.
As a sign of pure ingenious on the part of the athletic clothing manufacturers, they have designed full lines of girl’s athletic apparel. Any item of athletic apparel that you find for a man, you will also find made for a woman. Nike is one company that makes very popular girls athletic socks. Girl’s athletic shoes can be found in almost any store that sells athletic wear.
