Track and field started many years ago. The United States had their first track and field athletics back in the 1860s. The nation's first national athletic group, the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America sponsored the first collegiate races in 1873. In 1888, the Amateur Athletic Union held its first championships. One of the major criteria was the athletes had to be amateurs and could not compete professionally or receive training money or cash prizes. If found to be doing either of these, they would be banned from competing in track & field for life. Since that time, much as changed, and it is now a well-known national event.

Many stars of track and field have gone on to compete in track and field events in the National Olympics. Track and field scholarships have been very helpful in allowing many athletes to go on to school to excel in the sport of track and field. There is information at many athletic colleges about applying for a track and field scholarship.

The competition of track and field takes place on a track field and consists of many different competitions such as hurdling, steeplechase, relay races, and miscellaneous track events. The track and field rules are usually similar at most events, with some occasional variations. The rules should be reviewed and studied carefully before each different competition.
