Track And Field Symbol
Track and field is an athletic competition that consists of many events. Whether it's Olympic track and field or high school track and field, there are men as well as women competing in these numerous events. Each competitor's time and results are recorded on a sheet or board. When they give the results, they list the athlete's name, city, country or school they are representing, location of the event, date and the athlete's results. To save on space, the officials usually use a track field symbol for the results. With all the information given on the result sheets, the results are the only things that can be shortened by use of track and field symbols.
An example of a track & field symbol is "A", which means the mark was made over 1000m of altitude. These symbols for track and field have been used for so many years, that the officials automatically know what each of them mean. The participants in the track and field events are aware of the meaning behind each of them as well. The symbol meaning that a record was made indoors is "i". "M" is the track and field symbol for miles. The symbol for meters is the small "m". If the mark has not yet been determined and is still pending ratification, you will see the symbol "p". Most people know this, but the symbol "K" means kilometers. You will see this behind numbers describing specific races such as 10K or 5K races.

The high school track field symbol for running events is a runner running. Often when giving the results, there will be a "+" symbol after the time. This means that the mark given to the athlete was taken from another distance.
Although track & field symbols are used for most events, you will see them more on outdoor events. Sometimes, there will be a track & field symbol besides the ones used on the result sheet. You may see a picture of different Olympic tools, (javelin, discus, pole vault, etc) as a symbol representing the Olympics or track and field in genera. There are many gift items made with track and field symbols, or symbols of an event such as key rings or necklaces, etc. Depending on what sport you are interested in, many different symbols can be custom made on an item.
