Steeplechase
The steeplechase, which originated in the British Isles, is an obstacle race used in athletics. Steeple chase got its name from the steeplechase used in horseracing. In track and field, steeplechase is a very popular race. It's a type of foot race over an obstacle course that consists of water ditches, open ditches and fences. The person with the best steeplechases is declared the winner.
The length of the steeplerace is generally 3000 meters. The water jump may be on the inside of lane one or the outside of lane eight or nine. This is the determining factor on how many laps the race consists of. There are 28 steeplechase obstacles and 7 water jumps the runner has to deal with during the race. The barrier heights are 914 mm (36 in) for men and 762 mm (30 in) for women. Of course, as with any event, there will be specific rules for the competition.

Some of the barriers are spaced all around the track on level ground, another barrier is at the top of the second turn, and this is the water jump. A pit of water at the end follows this barrier. The purpose is to get the longest jumps in the water and over the barriers. When getting to the end of the race, many participants call that "my steeplechase". The worst thing that can happen in a steeplechase is a fall at any time. It's very important to try to maintain your momentum and not fall as you will lose much time. You can step on the barriers and not worry about knocking them over as in hurdles.
The 3000-meter steeplechase is for women but it has lower barriers set than what are used in the men's steeplechase. The first 3,000-meter steeplechase that was a championship was in the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki. Gulnara Samitova of Russia set the first official world record for running the 3000-meter steeplechase in 2003 with 9:01.59.
Training for the steeplechase takes a lot of time and perseverance, but is necessary to be ready to compete. You must be in good physical condition to be able to compete well. Steeplechase in track and field has been used for many years. Some individuals excel in this event and do it year after year competing for the Olympics.
