UK Athletics consists of a very broad department of sports. They have a different athletic club for each sport that is played. The most popular sport in the UK is football except in Wales where rugby is widely played. The UK athletics department was started in 1999 after the British Athletics Federation had to shut down due to lack of funds. The UK Athletics department is considered the 'governing body for the sport of athletics in the United Kingdom'. They have done a wonderful job of keeping all the major sports active and making them a large part of the United Kingdom athletics department. Another responsibility of the UK Athletics Department is being in charge of the countries athletics officials, or the judges of the many competitions in the UK.
On January 9, 2007, businessman Ed Warner was named chairman of the UK Athletics Department and Lynn Davies, the former British Olympic champion long jumper is the UK Athletics President. Lynn was captain of the British Olympic long jump team in prior to winning the gold medal in 1964.
